Dr. Joe Heppert

Joseph A. Heppert is Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies and Professor. As former Chair of the Chemistry Department of the University of Kansas, he was active in projects intended to improve science teaching and science teacher preparation, and is actively engaged in educational research related to these areas. Dr. Heppert has directed the University of Kansas’ Center for Science Education, an interdisciplinary Center involving science and technology educators, scientists, and engineers in projects intended to improve science education for all students in Kansas and foster science education scholarship that will benefit K-12 and university students throughout the nation. He was the director of a Kansas Board of Regents funded project that has developed and implemented teacher professional growth courses at the university level for middle school teachers. He was also the leader of the Kauffman Foundation pilot initiative to create an educational research consortium in the Kansas City metropolitan area. He has served as Education Director of the Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis, an NSF-funded Engineering Research Center whose mission is to enable the US chemical industry to reduce the impact of chemical processing on the environment while maintain its international competitiveness. He was the co-director of UKanTeach, an initiative funded by the National Mathematics and Science Institute that is re-envisioning the secondary mathematics and science teacher education program at the University of Kansas and dramatically increase the number of secondary mathematics and science teachers licensed in Kansas. Dr. Heppert has served on Senator Pat Roberts Advisory Committee on Science, Technology and the Future and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Advanced Academy of Georgia. He is the past chair of the American Chemical Society’s Committee on Education.
